Hand-dyed and hand-painted silk crepe de chine scarf, 8.25 x 48.5 inches long. This is a unique statement piece which will never be recreated the same way!
The dark taupe background color was achieved using a natural plant-based dye made of eucalyptus leaves, which I gathered myself in San Francisco. Eucalyptus contains powerful tannins which make a permanent dye.
The circle shapes were created using the itajime shibori technique, in which wooden shapes are clamped onto the fabric, resisting the application of dye. I also used tape to block off areas for painting the black lines with fiber-reactive dye.
An application of oatmeal paste and black dye created a texture layer in the design. The dye was steam set.
Then the pink circles were painted using permanent fabric markers (fluorescent!) and fabric pastels. The paints were heat cured using an iron one section at a time. This all took at least 20 hours to complete (I lost track!)
Scarf may be hand-washed in cold water. No need for dry-cleaning!
