About the "Dancing with Light" Series

In November of 2012, I was on tour as a violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Beijing, China. From my hotel room windows, I looked out at the multi-colored lights illuminating the night sky.

I began to play with my camera, moving it or zooming the lens during the exposures. It became a dance: a collaboration between my body, the camera, and the city lights. The lights trailed across the image arena, creating patterns from my gestures. This technique is called "kinetic light painting.”

Years later, in late 2021 and early 2022, the digital images were developed and transformed in my digital “darkroom” to arrive at their final form, in which they resemble abstract paintings with saturated patterns of color.

I created several groups of these pieces in different color palettes: Gestures on Black, Gestures on White, Mostly Blues, Orange and Blue, Purple/Magenta/Aqua, and Shifting Color Fields.

The titles came from my feelings about what stories the pieces evoke for me, but every viewer may feel differently about them. Every title contains a verb, because the sensation of movement is still present in the images.

This series is offered in the form of metal or acrylic face-mounted prints in a range of sizes. For more information about the printing process and materials, please see my Art Prints Info page.

Each piece comes with a signature and a certificate of authenticity. Some sizes are produced in limited editions.

Sizes available (in inches): 6 x 4, 12 x 8, 24 x 16, 30 x 20, 36 x 24, 48 x 32, 60 x 40

Other sizes, including larger ones, can be produced upon request.
